What is the difference between estimates and quotes ?

These terms are used interchangeably and there are small but significant differences between them. Read below.

Should I request a quote or an estimate ?

An estimate is a best guess of how much a job might cost. A quote is detailed and exact within reason. Once you’ve accepted a quote (barring the exceptions) the contractor has an obligation to deliver on the Scope, Quality, Quantity, within the Duration and Cost.

Why is an estimate generally free but a quotation costs money ?

Contractors normally do not charge for an estimate on smaller jobs like painting, window washing, or lawn services. Rule of thumb is that if a contractor incurs costs to provide you with a price, he expects payment or invests in getting your business. If the work is simple and doesn’t require in-depth consultation or design work, estimates are generally free of charge. If it’s more complex; expect a professional to inform you upfront.

What information can I expect in estimates and quotes ?

Both estimates and quotes have a job description, dimensions, price and schedule -start date and duration. Professionals normally document the work in a contract, mostly require a deposit with progressive payments to cover their cashflow. Especially if the work is spread over several weeks.
